I reviewing the thriller film Klute starring Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland which is an excellent movie. This is an adult thriller directed by Alan J Packula and he did a kind of trilogy of these kind of thrillers including the Parrallax View.  This film is set in New York and starts with a missing man who has allegedly been sending a call girl played by Jane Fonda obscene letters. His wife can’t believe it and hires a private detective played by Donald Sutherland to find him. He rents an apartment next to Jane Fonda and as he investigates the case a relationship between the 2 begins. We find in the scenes where Jane visits the psychiatrist that being in prostitution is anything but glamorous with her being unable to answer the phone for people stalking her and desperately wants to get out of the business. She tells Donald she was beaten up a client 2 years ago but can’t remember very well what he looked like. She used to have a pimp whom they visit because initially they think that is the man who has gone missing but gradually and as other people get killed it becomes apparent that man murdered the man who has gone missing and is a serial killer. Eventually Donald starts to suspect a police chief of creating the obscene letter and doing the murders and asks him for $500.00 for a fictitious notebook that doesn’t exist but he claims will name the killer to flush him out. Jane won the Oscar for best actress for her role and a load of other awards and it is an astonishing performance that also made her an international star. Donald was nominated for the Oscar for best actor. It is a film well ahead of its time when it was much later started appreciating the problem stalking was. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and would definitely recommend it.
